Inle Lake

One of the most popular tourist destinations in Myanmar has now been named a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve – the first in the country. Known for its gorgeous scenery, cultural handicraft traditions, floating vegetable gardens and iconic “one-legged” fishermen, Inle lake in the southern Shan state of eastern Myanmar is a must-see spot for travellers from around the world. The newly named reserve, which covers an impressive 489,721 hectares, will help further promote sustainable development and practices to help support the vibrant flora and fauna in the region, along with the traditional livelihoods of those who live there. One of the most sought-after activities in Inle Lake is a relaxing day-long boat trip around the lake complete with stops at bustling local markets, sparkling temples and pagodas, intriguing artists’ workshops and more.
