Known for its gorgeous scenery, cultural handicraft traditions, floating vegetable gardens and iconic “one-legged” fishermen, Inle lake in the southern Shan state of eastern Myanmar is a must-see spot for travellers from around the world. The newly named reserve, which covers an impressive 489,721 hectares, will help further promote sustainable development and practices to help support the vibrant flora and fauna in the region, along with the traditional livelihoods of those who live there.

One of the most sought-after activities in Inle Lake is a relaxing day-long boat trip around the lake complete with stops at bustling local markets, sparkling temples and pagodas, intriguing artists’ workshops and more.

Taste of Inle Lake

Explore the region’s morning market, which rotates its location around the lake’s villages in a 5-day rhythm and is visited by all kinds of people from surrounding villages and hill tribes.

Continue across the lake, passing through villages with stilted houses and floating gardens to visit Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda, the lake’s main sanctuary , the village of Inpawkhone to observe the traditional silk weaving techniques of Inthar people.

Cruise along foliage cloaked canals to the lakeside village of In Dein in the afternoon. Here you will explore the ancient stupas of Nyaung Ohak and Shwe Inn Thein Paya. The structures date from the 17th and 18th centuries and while some have been restored.

Spend your morning on Inle Lake by boat to observe the lives of those who earn their livelihood on and around the lake. Witness the unique fishing techniques used by local Inthar fishermen, and see the ‘floating gardens’ where local people use indigenous methods to grow a variety of crops suspended in the water along the way to the morning market which is a chance to meet some of the people who gather here from the surrounding hilltribe villages.
We will then pay a visit to a local Intha house where we’ll enjoy some free time for a discussion with family about daily life and culture with a glass of plain tea before heading to kitchen.

Start with a local market visit where the trainer will tell you about the produce on offer and the ingredients . Then, board your private boat for an afternoon excursion on the Inle Lake to the village of The Lay Oo, sitting on the eastern shore of Inle Lake. The mojor crops farmed are rice, sugar cane, potato, tomato, garlic and a variety of beans as well as cucumber and flowers. Take a stroll through the village and the surrounding organic farmland. In the afternoon, leisurely bike ride from Nyaung Shwe to vineyard “Red Mountain Winery Estate”. Begin on two wheels as you ride through the small town’s sleepy streets. Stop for photos and village visits along the way. End your ride at Red Mountain for a tasting of splendid red and white wines. Observe wine making facilities before settling down at their hilltop restaurant for a tasting before cycling back to Nyaung Shwe and transfer back to your hotel on the shore of Inle Lake.
